INSIDER: STOCKHOLM DESIGN WEEK 2018
The opening of Stockholm Design week heralds the awakening of the perennially chic Scandinavian Design Crowd.
The first week in February is the most important week of the year for Scandinavian design, the top opportunity for budding designers and established brands to showcase their latest happenings, provide inspiration and attend related events.

The event takes from 5th-11th of February 2018, in Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm. Known as ‘beauty on the water’ the city is synonymous with Scandinavian design, the epicentre for designs focused on a minimalist yet functional approach. During Stockholm Design Week, the spotlight is shone on the biggest Scandinavian designers as well as its future stars. We take a look at some of the key attendees at this year’s event who will be present at the popular Stockholm furniture and light fair.
Joanna Laajisto
Functionality, quality and aesthetics are the key elements of Joanna Laajisto’s designs. The Finnish designer has been creating pieces since 2010, with a focus on sustainability in the commercial environment. At Stockholm design week this year, Laajisto presents a collection inspired by the traditional Scandinavian holiday cabins found in the peripheries. Crafted entirely from wood, the collection offers a modern interpretation of classic cabin furniture. The collection features a bench and side table constructed from beech and ash which embraces the natural, organic forms that Laajisto is famous for.

Hem
The botanical trend recognised by exhibitors at Maison & Objet in Paris last month, is ever present by their Scandinavian counterparts. Stockholm based independent furniture brand, Hem, presented a contemporary home and office solution on their stand, showcasing the close relationship between Skandi interior design and nature. The underlying characteristic of the pieces made by Hem is a manner of practicality fused with simplistic styling.

Made by Choice
With roots in Finnish culture and a reputation for embracing the traditional manufacturing techniques of woodwork, made by choice is an award-winning contemporary design house. The company is dedicated to producing durable, bold and innovative furniture designs at affordable prices. For Stockholm Design week, the company have teamed up to host a pop up restaurant and showroom with premium fast food by EGG. The restaurant features pieces designed in collaboration with Joanna Laajisto (see above)

We are looking forward to discovering the latest emerging trends and releases from Stockholm over the next week.
