5 OF THE BEST: RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

The Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show has been a British institution since 1913. It is arguably the best place in the world to find cutting edge new trends and ideas.

Inspiration as diverse as perfumes (The Fragrance Garden from Harrods – Heart Notes) to the Battle of Waterloo (The Living Legacy Garden by Darwin Property Investment Management) were shown this year. We pick some of our favourites.

Dark Matter Garden for the National Schools’ Observatory

Won: Best Fresh Garden, Gold – Designed by: Howard Miller Design Ltd. The National Schools Observatory is on a mission to enthuse children about science and technology. A team of horticulturalists, astronomers and construction experts have created this garden, adorned with stunning rusted sculptural elements. The Dark Matter Garden aims to represent the effect of dark matter on light. A lattice of steel rods depicts the bending trajectory of light around massive objects in the universe.

The Morgan Stanley Healthy Cities Garden

Won: Gold – Designed by: Chris Beardshaw. After the show, the Healthy City garden will be transferred almost entirely to form the centrepiece of a new community project that is being launched by Morgan Stanley in East London. Within the design Chris has considered the mechanism of what makes a city healthy and, by definition, what creates a healthy community.

The Laurent-Perrier Chatsworth Garden

Won: Best Show Garden, Gold – Designed by: Dan Pearson. This beautiful garden depicts the shard heritage of Chatsworth and Laurent-Perrier with nature, evoking the grounds of historic family homes. Inspired by the wilder areas of the Chatsworth estate, the trout stream and rockery, natural planting is recreated, using worn woods and rocks to make this garden seem to have been in place for centuries.

The Sculptor’s Picnic Garden by Walker’s Nurseries

Won: Best Artisan Garden and Gold – Designed by: Graham Bodle. Naturalism is back, with the wonderfully titled Sculptors Picnic Garden leading the way. Using reclaimed tree roots, rocks and water to provide a perfect habitat for wildlife and planted with pines, conifers and grasses.

The Telegraph Garden

Won: Gold – Designed by: Marcus Barnett. Inspired by the De Stijl Movement, The Telegraph Garden has strong geometry with coloured blocks. Trees and hedges introduce vertical detailing, sculptural form and dappled shade, complementing a series of paths and waterways. Vibrant primary colours used by the De Stijl Movement are emphasised.
